This piece is one of one.

Created in dialogue with Nebula in Bloom, Cosmic Dust continues Isabella Empey’s exploration of formation within darkness. Where Nebula in Bloom considers the quiet ignition of something beginning to take shape, Cosmic Dust steps even further back, into the atmosphere before bloom. It reflects the suspended moment before emergence, when matter gathers, when light is present but not yet fully realized.

The work meditates on origin. In astronomy, cosmic dust is the substance from which stars and systems are formed. In Empey’s visual language, it becomes a metaphor for the unseen accumulation of experience, memory, and emotion that precedes visible transformation. The painting suggests that growth does not begin with bloom, but with gathering. Before expansion, there is suspension. Before radiance, there is particle and pressure.

Composed with layered acrylic, flowing alcohol ink, and luminous mica powder, the surface carries a mineral shimmer that shifts with movement and light. Soft blues, deep violets, and illuminated whites drift across the canvas, creating an atmosphere that feels both infinite and intimate. Transparency and opacity interact gently, allowing depth to emerge without sharp boundary. The mica catches light like distant constellations, reinforcing the sense of quiet formation.
